When was Sias International School founded?
We are a brand new school with our official opening to take place in August, 2020. Though we are new, we belong to a venerable well-established organization that has operated international schools around the world for over 60 years: International School Services (ISS). Sias International School is one of several new International schools in China for which ISS is the managing partner.
What is ISS and how are they involved with Sias International School?
ISS is a nonprofit organization. It works with more than 500 international schools and thousands of educators each year offering a variety of management services to these schools such as:
- starting up new international schools - such as Sias International School!
- supplying teaching and learning resources from around the world;
- recruiting highly qualified and experienced professional educators;
- providing professional development to the school faculty and staff;
- assisting with school accounting and financial functions;
- assisting with school leadership and governance.
What grade levels will be offered and who are the students who will attend Sias International School?
Sias International School will enroll children from Pre-kindergarten 3, for 3-year-olds, to Grade 12, i.e. from early primary to end of secondary. We expect to grow from the lower grades to the higher grades over the next several years, but we will be prepared to admit students at any age between 3 years and 18 years.
Any child with a foreign passport will be permitted to attend Sias IS. We expect therefore that our student body will be international in its mix, mostly Asian children with foreign passports. To the extent that foreign investors from other parts of the world settle in Central China, we expect that children from Europe, North and South America, Africa, Australia and New Zealand will join us.
What is the relationship between Sias International School and Sias University?
The founder of Sias University, Dr. Shawn Chen, is also the founder of Sias International School. Sias University is the first American-owned post-secondary school in Central China and is located in Xinzheng, nearby to our school in Zheng Dong New District, Zhengzhou. Sias University has a visionary curriculum combining Chinese and Western educational philosophies, has a modern and international campus staffed by foreign faculty and using English as the language of instruction. Students in both schools follow a learning program that combines science, technology, engineering, mathematics, arts, and sports with a focus on developing their creative talents and innovative thinking skills.
What will be the curriculum program at Sias International School?
The Common Core program offered in the United States will form the basis of the Sias curriculum. With this program, the students' learning is measured against internationally accepted performance standards. It allows us to incorporate some very innovative elements such as the Leader in Me.
Self-directed, guided inquiry learning is at the heart of the Leader in Me approach. As our mission statement exclaims, Sias International School is focussed on developing academic excellence and innovative leadership in its students, young people who will be strong achievers, courageous innovators, multilingual communicators and responsible global citizens.
For students in the high school grade levels, we will be offering the Advanced Placement (AP), a program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers university preparation courses and formal examinations to prepare students for universities around the world. In fact, American colleges and universities may actually grant course credit to students who obtain high scores on their AP examinations!
When will Sias International School be open and how do I apply?
Our permanent facilities are now under construction and will be ready to accept students for our formal opening in August 2020. Within a year or so, our boarding facilities will also be open and students from outside of Zhengzhou who wish to join us will be able to do so, living on campus during the week and returning home on the weekends.
